Railway system

COSEF, the Consortium for Economic Development of Friuli has 3 railway links for the movement of trains entering and leaving industrial areas.
The Industrial Areas that currently offer this service are Udine (ZIU), Buja and Osoppo (Upper Friuli) and San Giorgio di Nogaro (ZIAC).

Railway system of the Upper Friuli Industrial Area

The Industrial Area of Upper Friuli (formerly CIPAF) of Rivoli di Osoppo represents an important centre of international value in relation to the transport of goods both by road and by rail. The main industries located there are each connected with their own independent track to the European railway network through the common facilities of the link (basic link). The basic link of the industrial area of Upper Friuli was built in 1976 and constantly strengthened as the established industries proceeded to expand their internal tracks to increase their transport by rail, thereby giving a positive response to the general national and EU orientation, aimed at encouraging rail transport. In the industrial area of Rivoli di Osoppo there is considerable handling of goods by road, however balanced by parallel and continuous development of rail transport.
From the initial four thousand wagons/year, equal to 160,000 tonnes/year, freight traffic in the Industrial Area is today exceeding just over thirty wagons/year equal to over one million tonnes/year with almost constant increases.
The railway movement on the systems of the base link of the industrial area of Upper Friuli, exceeds 35,000 wagons per year and tends to further increase in its volumes; this means that 60,000 wagons/year (dynamic capacity) will have to travel through the station in opposite or simultaneous manoeuvres to allow planned and scheduled departures/arrivals of the trains of the Railway Carriers from/to Osoppo station. Progressive development and strengthening of the plants that constitute the basic link of the industrial area of Osoppo has been put in place, which provides for the expansion and adaptation of the "birch" station, doubling of the southern backbone track towards the companies established with greater traffic , the enthrallment works on the main backbone which allows better shunting of the wagons, the construction of a square and relative roads for the activation of a small system for intermodal and combined transport, the strengthening and rationalisation of the intermodal system and the construction of two new tracks inside the station for the movement of wagons entering and exiting it. The plant is also equipped with a modern dynamic weighing system that allows weighing of moving wagons up to 7 km/h without therefore the conspicuous time wasting that traditional static weighing imposes.
Originally the railway station in the industrial area of Upper Friuli was used by the two companies connected exclusively for the supply of raw materials (wood, ferrous scrap and urea) used in the production processes. Since 2013, an entire track of the Osoppo railway station has been reserved for finished product trains bound for Austria and Slovenia. This service, considered essential for this Consortium, will be implemented shortly with the construction of two new tracks dedicated to this purpose.

Description of the railway facility
The railway system of the Upper Friuli station is structured and organised with the technical characteristics indicated in the PDF attached below.

Dorsal tracks
The main dorsal track, "North backbone", from the railway gate to the point of switch no. 1 is 472.00 m long. The "South backbone" extends 1,053.00 m and the links of the Companies PITTINI SpA and FANTONI SpA branch off from it. On the entire Base Link, on the collection and delivery tracks and on those inside the link, the minimum radius of curvature is not less than 150 m.

Tracks inside the link
Inside the railway station of the industrial area of Upper Friuli there are 11 tracks and four escape tracks, one of which is dedicated to the maintenance of locomotives and to their diesel fuel supply.
There is a static weighing machine installed on track 6 with a capacity of up to 120 tonnes, while track 1 is dedicated to trains with finished products leaving the station towards Austria and Slovenia.
In the industrial area of Osoppo there are 8 level crossings, all equipped with optical luminous signalling systems.

Technical characteristics of the tracks inside the link
The characteristics are indicated in the PDF attached below.

Some of the tracks listed above are partially or completely flush and in particular:

- Weighing station track completely flush
- Track 11 completely flush
- Tracks 9 and 10 flush respectively in the section between switch 14a-14b and the escape track and between switch 15 and the escape track
- 1st and 2nd northern escape track presence of level crossing on the east side
- 1st and 2nd intermodal escape tracks, presence of level crossing on the east side

The Management Body Office, located in the building inside the CIPAF station, coordinates the manoeuvres of its own personnel and checking of personnel of other railway companies.
The office is provided with a mobile radio device while the teams have portable radios supplied to each operator.
The Locomotive Depot apron and the railway line of the station are equipped with a lighting system. The switching on and off of the lights is performed by the management body, as well as routine maintenance while the supply of electricity is managed by the COSEF Consortium.

Railway system of the Industrial Area of Udine

Link at the service of the ZIU
The backbone track extends for about 5.5 km from North to South and originates near the Udine station through the communication of switches 31a/b and running parallel to the Udine-Cervignano railway line, it ends in the Udine industrial area at the Lumignacco stop at km 5+550 (corresponding to km 6+887 of the Udine - Cervignano A.G. line). The interchanges of the Partidòr station are inserted from km 0+924 to km 1+291 of the aforementioned track. This station, consisting of no. 8 tracks with a parking length varying from 250 m to 530 m, some of which are level, is used for parking, picking up and delivering railway trains destined for/coming to/from production sites; the spindle-shaped plant is perpendicular to the dorsal track (west - east direction) and is connected to the latter with two branches, the first on the Udine side and the second on the Palmanova side.

Railway system of the Aussa Corno Industrial Area

Link at the service of the ZIU
The basic link serving the Aussa-Corno Industrial Area is connected to the San Giorgio di Nogaro station by means of the connecting track corresponding to the stretch up to km 1+302 from the former San Giorgio di Nogaro - Porto Nogaro single track line.
At this starting point, corresponding to km 0+000 of the base link track, the dorsal track branches off to serve the special junctions in the industrial area which extends southwards for a length of km 6+154. From km 0+900 to km 2+130 approximately, the dorsal is double track. There are also two "bundles" of tracks used for the temporary storage of wagons awaiting delivery to the connected companies and a bidirectional dynamic weigher with a weighing range from 5 to 100 tonnes and with a maximum axial load of 30 tonnes.
The basic link also allows direct connection with the port and the Margreth quay, thus guaranteeing full intermodality of freight traffic.

Pick-up and delivery tracks: Dangerous goods - “new track III” at San Giorgio di Nogaro station (emergency management is also used). Other goods - "track VII" at San Giorgio di Nogaro station.
Temporary wagon parking tracks: Bundles Rema, AdriaEst, Selvata and Asola Sud.
Dangerous goods: entering and exiting the special Lampogas link.
Electrified base link tracks: No.
Intermodal base link tracks: No.
Permanent way materials: FS46, 50UNI, 60UNI.
Load limits allowed circulating: 20 t/axle - 7.2 t/running metre (category C3 lines).
